SUMMARY:

Chapter 9 opens with Team Z gathered in their room, struggling to identify their individual “weapons,” the strengths that define them as strikers. One by one, the players confidently list their abilities, yet Isagi freezes when his turn arrives. His hesitation deepens his self-doubt, making him painfully aware that he still doesn’t understand what sets him apart in a competition built on ego and clarity of purpose. The tension rises further when Chigiri refuses to share his own weapon, hinting at wounds he isn’t ready to reveal.

As Kuon steps forward with a plan built around the team’s strengths, he proposes a structured strategy that would allow every player to shine. His idea, “Operation: Me, Next 9,” becomes the foundation for their next match, giving the team a sense of direction they desperately lacked. Although not everyone is fully convinced, the urgency of survival pushes them to commit to the plan, marking their first real step toward functioning as a unified group.

Training begins immediately, and while the team remains rough and uncoordinated, the shared fear of elimination slowly pulls them together. Isagi throws himself into practice, but a lingering insecurity gnaws at him. Alone in the dining hall after hours, he wonders if he is improving at all, or if he is simply falling behind players who seem more gifted and self-assured. His frustration reaches a breaking point until an unexpected voice interrupts his spiraling thoughts.

Kunigami approaches, asking to sit with him, and their quiet conversation becomes the emotional core of the chapter. When Isagi asks why he plays soccer, Kunigami answers with disarming sincerity: he wants to become a superhero. He recalls the strikers he admired as a child and the courage they gave him, declaring that he wants to inspire others in the same way. His honesty leaves Isagi stunned, admiring Kunigami’s unwavering resolve and clarity of purpose.

Their bond deepens when Kunigami shares his goal bonus steak with Isagi, explaining that half the credit for the goal belonged to him. As they talk, Kunigami helps Isagi realize that he instinctively “smelled a goal,” an unconscious ability that might be his hidden weapon. The chapter closes with the two promising to crush the next game together, a moment that reignites Isagi’s confidence and strengthens the growing unity within Team Z.
